Allen Joseph Stout was born in Danville, Kentucky, on December 5, 1815. He was the tenth child born into an impoverished family, and following the death of his mother in 1824 he worked as hired help. Stout first heard Mormon preaching from Charles C. Rich in the 1830s, and in 1837 traveled with his father to Far West, Missouri. He was baptized into the Mormon Church in 1838.
